Elective Affinities is a digital archive founded and directed by Anna & Eugeni Bach with the collaboration of Guillem Molas.
The archive contains a selection of works that form part of the studio’s personal affinities. All of them have been revisited and rephotographed with the aim of sharing them alongside a comprehensive selection of carefully chosen original material.
Elective Affinities is a term coined in the nineteenth century that refers to the chemical relationships which, under certain circumstances, occur between different compounds. In his famous novel of the same name, Goethe transferred this behaviour from chemistry to sentimental relationships. At Elective Affinities we do likewise, borrowing the meaning of this term to bring it into the field of architecture.
All current photographs of the published works are taken by Anna & Eugeni Bach, who hold the copyright. Their use is not permitted without prior express request. Team
Anna & Eugeni Bach is an architecture practice whose work is grounded in four strands: professional practice, teaching, research and cultural activity. Currently Professors of Practice at Washington University in St. Louis, USA, they were directors of the 15th Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial and curators of the exhibition “Human Traces – World Heritage” at the Alvar Aalto Museum in Finland. Their work has been recognised with, among others, the European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention, the FAD International Award, the FAD Award on five occasions, the ASCER Award for Spanish Architecture and the CityScape International Award. Their work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale on four occasions, at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris, the ICO Museum in Madrid and the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art.
Guillem Molas is an architect trained in Barcelona and Madrid. He is co-responsible for the selection of projects, the contemporary visual documentation, the historical sources and the editorial management of the archive.
