«The most suitable form for housing 42 head of cattle was found to be a pear-shaped layout. The fodder is pushed down from above onto the feeding table, which thus serves simultaneously as a feeding floor. The distribution of feed is greatly simplified as a result. At the same time, the mucking out of the stall can be done in one continuous movement without turning back. A further advantage of this layout is that the animals do not face each other directly and therefore cannot breathe on one another, which in cases of disease reduces the risk of transmission. The inspection of the animals — these are high-quality breeding cattle — is possible in a single circuit, and not only from behind as is usual, but also from the head. […]
The windows are placed very high under the ceiling as a continuous band and cannot be opened, since the smaller or larger ventilation of the stall is regulated entirely independently of them […] The outer walls are unloaded, serving only as weather and thermal protection. […]
The form of this building was thus arrived at by setting as the goal the finding of the form that would most simply and directly correspond to the performance requirements of the building. For influences of any other kind — folk art, regional traditions, Saxon horse-crowned gables — there was naturally no room here; and yet the building stands on the ground and in the landscape with a greater inner belonging than any of the old buildings standing beside it.» —H.
